The club was formed in 1973 when Mr Fred Gore and Mr Bill Robinson held a meeting in what was then the Park Café. Early meetings took place in the Bull and Dog before the club took over the café and made it their Clubhouse (“The Tavern”). It is still the headquarters of the club but a new clubhouse is planned for 2008. The Tavern is open to members of the public.
The club exists to provide organised competitive golf throughout the year. Members choose to play the main weekly competition on Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning. All members are eligible to enter all of the competitions, regardless of handicap.
The male section offers a recognised English Golf Union handicap, which is accepted world wide; affiliated membership of the Lancashire Union of Golf; affiliated membership of Merseyside Municipal Golf Clubs and the Association of South Lancashire Municipal Golf Clubs.
The ladies section offers a full range of competition golf, a warm welcome, a friendly atmosphere and an opportunity to become part of a well-established ladies golf section.
The club is professionally run throughout, with a management committee that oversees the general running of the club and a greens committee that runs all competitions over a 52 week period, enabling Sherdley Park Golf Club to pride itself on being one of the best run and friendliest municipal golf clubs in the North West.
